about
Featuring rich and delicate three-part vocal harmonies, this traditional-styled folk song speaks to the universal experience of growing apart in the digital age. Inspired by the loss of a long-term friendship that changed unexpectedly during a single encounter in which values collided, the track is a snapshot of how easily we connect—and disconnect—in the age of social media. “We can’t really count on being close to old friends as we grow older in the same way we used to,” Hannah says. “Everything can change quickly and erase years of intimate connection. My song is about just how fragile friendships and relationships can be in such a divisive time.”
lyrics
Verse 1
You were my best friend
Thick and thin to the bitter end
Sharing stories into the night
I never doubted it was right
All your secrets I held close
Time went fast but we made the most
Forever friends in high school
Proved an exception to the rule
Chorus
Shut me up, shut me down
You don’t want me around
It’s been tried and it’s true
There’s no us, there’s only you
Verse 2
Time went by, our lives realigned
We found jobs to pass the time
Your judgment was plain
You viewed my choice with disdain
Thought I was skipping to the fast lane
You never let me explain
And I weathered the pain
What did you really have to gain?
Chorus
Bridge
Only you could make me feel so unwanted
Only you could twist my words from my mouth
Only you consume my mind and leave me haunted
Only you could make everything go south
Verse 3
I remember your warm smile
It’s been gone for a long while
I still care for you, friend
Even though we’ve reached the end
There’s no way I can change your mind
Maybe it’ll heal with time
Let’s both carry on
Let bygones go and get gone
Chorus
Shut me up, shut me down
You don’t want me around
It’s been tried and it’s true
There’s no us, there’s only you
There’s no us, there’s only you
There’s no us, there’s only you
