about

It is natural that a tune about being the millennial generation’s guardians of sacred folk traditions would have an organic folk spirit and spirited singalong element. With shout-outs to Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, the song aims to convey the humble sense of connection that Hannah feels to this great songwriting tradition, which seeks to improve people’s lives: “Our gospel fights injustice and we speak to those unseen.”

The track is also a fond reflection on Hannah’s immersion in folk and roots music during college, where she was a member of Yale’s renowned folk ensemble, Tangled Up in Blue. She says about the experience, “We had so much fun and got to use our creativity, which is when I started writing my own songs seriously. It was a very special community of musicians. This band has that same feel—like a small community of four independent musicians dedicated to guarding the folk tradition for this generation and those to come.”

lyrics

Verse 1
Miles away, years ago
I met you when I still had room to grow
In a dream that turned real
You showed me how to feel

Pre-chorus 1
Guitars in a smoke-filled room
Nothing felt more like home than those tunes

Chorus
The guardians of song will forever live on
After the legends are long gone
When I hear a tune from those glory days
I’ll stand up and sing along
You help me carry it on, and on, and on, and on (x3)
Guardians of song

Verse 2
We share a storyteller’s gene
Our gospel fights injustice and we speak to those unseen
Young faces with old souls
A New Haven to foster our goals

Pre-chorus 2
All were welcome there
Didn’t have much money but we felt like millionaires

Chorus

Alt Section
Now we’re grown, live on our own
Working life is hard alone
Some of us persevere, music casts away our fears
A fairytale that’s all ears

Verse 3
Bob Dylan bought a guitar
Joni Mitchell sang in bars
They started out like you and me
See what they came to be

Pre-chorus 3
Decades won’t keep us apart
The same spirit lives deep in our hearts

Chorus
